This month at St. Matthew United Methodist Church

St. Matthew United Methodist Church was 45 years old on September 16th. We will celebrate on Sunday, September 23rd following the 9:00 a.m. service.  Please come to the Activity Center and meet with Pastor Brooke, meet the new members and celebrate our church's birthday.

New Rehearsal Times for the Hands of Joy Choir

Beginning this Saturday, September 22nd at 10 a.m. the Hands of Joy choir will meet for the usual hour and a half in the choir room in the B Building.  This will be our regular rehearsal time.

Intergenerational Worship Service

On Sunday, September 2, we had the first "Intergenerational Worship Service".  These will take place on all three-day holiday weekends and 5th Sundays. Children will remain in worship following the children's moment. All generations will have role in these worship services and if you are interested in participating please email belle@stmatthewmesa.org.


Everyone is Welcome for Special Events!

October 9 – EYE HEALTH  (Macular Degeneration & Diabetic Eye Problems).  Carol Huston will share with us on these topics along with a video from her eye specialist. 

United Methodist Women-Morning Glories

Youth Band

 Youth Band Practice takes place on the 2nd and 4th Sundays at 11:30 a.m. All instruments, all skill levels welcome.  For details email Eric at eric@stmatthewmesa.org. If you have instruments hiding in a closet that are no longer used, please consider donating them to the band.  They are very excited about this opportunity.

Girl Scouts

Girl Scout Troop 841 meets weekly from 2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. in the B building. We would love to have anyone interested in joining us to come on by and check us out! Fall Product sales of chocolate and nuts will be starting the end of September. Look for our table and help support our troop! From Desert Southwest Conference

You are encouraged to pray for the churches and pastors of the East District of the Desert Southwest Conference. The churches have been divided by the months for the Appointment Year. For each month, a list of those churches will be in your church newsletter and/or weekly bulletin, ask your prayer teams to include those churches in prayer, and involve the whole congregation in praying.  In September, please pray for the following:  Sun Lakes UMC; St. Paul’s UMC, Globe; St. Matthew UMC, Mesa; Spirit of Joy UMC, Coolidge.  In October, please pray for the following:  Song of Life UMC, Queen Creek; Shepherd of the Pines UMC, Overgaard; Scottsdale UMC, Scottsdale; Red Mountain UMC, Mesa

Share the Blessing

Help us spread the word! Every other Saturday, St. Matthew is proud to serve families who are in need of food assistance by passing out non-perishable food boxes from 8:30 am until the boxes are all distributed. Each box is given on a first come, first serve basis and feeds a family of four for 3-4 days. Please share the program and invite people to come to our church campus every other Saturday to make use of our program. For questions, email bdey123@gmail.com.  Join the crew and find joy in serving.  We have fun too.  (See pictures on the Serve/Outreach page.) Next distribution dates:  September 22. 
We need more canned food.  If you would like to donate, bring canned food to building B on the Thursday morning (around 9 am) prior to a Sharing-the-blessings-Saturday so they can be packed! Thank you!
Someone with a full-size pick-up is needed to pick up the food on Thursday and bring it to the church. Please contact the church office or e-mail bdey123@gmail.com for further information. 


Fall study beganThursday September 13, 8 a.m. - 9:15 a.m., and will end December 13. Classes are held in room C4 of the Activity Center. The current Study will be a continuation of Fruit of the Spirit by Beth Moore.  All women are invited. Please join us.

United Methodist Men

The Thursday Men's Bible Study,  meets at 6:45 a.m. in room C6/C7.  Please join us for study and fellowship.

Monday Evening Bible Study     

All Men and Women are invited for a Study of Galatians Monday evenings from 7:00 p.m.- 8:30 p.m. in the Activity Center, Room C4 beginning on September 17th. This class is designed to give us a history of the beginning of the church and the involvement of some Apostles. You will need your Bible. Child care will be provided if needed.

A widely admired mainstream pastor shows how people and communities can flourish as beacons of hope and serenity in an anxious age. Monthly Book Readers Group

The September book is Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.  We will be meeting at 10:30 a.m. on September 30 in room B 13. (We are booked into B13 for September, October and November.)  All are invited, whether or not you have read the book.  Please join us.  We welcome newcomers.  Happy Reading!

Wellness Support Group

Come to a non-judgmental environment to share, discuss wellness goals and gain tips from each other!  All are welcome. We meet Sundays at 10:30 a.m. in B12. 

Holy Yoga

Come stretch and release tension! We meet Tuesday and Friday, every week, at 9:30 AM in the Activity Center for gentle restorative body work in a chair or on a mat.

Tuesday Coffee Group


Come join us for coffee and conversation on Tuesdays at Village Inn, Southern and Dobson (1115 S. Dobson Rd.) in Mesa, at 3:00 p.m.  Everyone welcome. No reservations needed.  Pastor Brooke will be joining us.

Habitat for Humanity

Our next build will not start until January and we do not know where it might be. I will find out in the fall sometime and will be letting all of you know what/ when/how you can assist. We will be asking for donations again in late November. Please do not be afraid to get hold of me, Pat Reed, 602-316-3724 anytime you have any questions. This has been a super year! Sound Booth

Congregational Care:

"Friendly Visitors" is a program to visit or call St. Matthew members who are unable to be part of our worship service for a variety of reasons and who need someone to call them or visit them. If you are interested, e-mail Suvasini at smccormick5@cox.net.

Join the Sanctuary Choir! Or the Bell Choir!

Sanctuary Choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. and the Bell Choir rehearses on Thursdays at 6 p.m. We would love to have you be a part of a choir this season. All you need is a willing heart, a desire to sing or learn to play the bells, and a little bit of time! Join the Hands of Joy Sign Language Choir

Beginning this Saturday, September 22nd at 10 a.m. the Hands of Joy choir will meet for the usual hour and a half in the choir room in the B Building. All are welcome to join us whether you know how to sign or not. We’ll teach you! If you’d like to learn a few signs or just enjoy the sounds of the season, you are welcome to join us. Keep an eye out for our Christmas concert and come enjoy an afternoon as we share some Peace on Earth. If you have lost an item, please check with the ushers.  The Lost and Found is located at the end of the counter near the door to the Chapel.

New forms have been added under the About/Forms tab.  If you need visitation, medical equipment, or use of a room or space on the patio, please check for the proper form.  Youth forms are also located in that section.

Pastor Brooke's sermon was for All Generations: "Remember Jesus"


The Offering Music was sung by Tony Joseph who offered at beautiful rendition of "Just A Closer Walk with Thee" with backup by the Sanctuary Choir.  Tony also led us in the closing Hymn " Down by the Riverside", and had the whole congregation clapping and keeping time.



On September 2nd we were also privileged to have Special Music by the Youth Band.  Participating were: Mya Asher, soloist, with backup by Director Eric Everett, and accompaniment by Justin Legg, Jordan Legg and Terrance Brown.  Their offering was "How Great is Our God".  Great job, kids!!!!




Children's Sunday School

Last in the Abundance Series

This Sunday was the last in the Abundance Series. In addition to receiving communion by Intinction, Pastor Brooke consecrated more loaves of bread (both with gluten and without) that were enjoyed together with jam and butter at coffee fellowship after service, celebrating the abundance God offers us in Christ.






Youth Mission Trip to Cortez, CO

What a wonderful trip these youth had, and what wonderful service they gave to those they met in Cortez.  Following a slideshow, Youth Ministries Director Eric Everett and wife Kelly related some of the things the youth did and how proud they are of this group.  Some of the young folks told us about their experiences in Cortez and how they felt serving the elderly people they met. 




 Pets on Parade

August 12th featured a cute dog, half Maltese and half Poodle, owned by the Livingston family.


Our third Sunday featured Rocky, the Bearded Dragon.


Our second Sunday featured Frank, the cat, owned by the Huffmans.


July 15-Our first Sunday of Pets on Parade featured Gertie the Tortoise, who belongs to Stephanie Beamsley.


Youth Volleyball



The volleyball team placed 4th in the tournament.  Not bad for a new and relatively inexperienced team!
